Pete Chandler
Railway modelling has been 'in my blood' for about 65 years, with especially the scenic side of the hobby being my main fascination.
Professionally speaking my career as a graphic designer goes back to the day I left the Croydon College of Art & Design in 1967 and was hired by an advertising agency in holborn, london. happy days.
Employed mainly as a designer involved with the industries of pop music, video and home entertainment, plus a few less glamorous empires, my work also included model making for exhibition design, displays, TV projects, board games, presentation gifts and so on - a sort of 'special projects' guy.
As a semi professional keyboard player, now retired, live music has, and still is, also very much a part of my make up, with mainstream jazz my choice of listening.
The pop scene 'back in the day', when skiffle, rock 'n' roll and beat groups were the norm, with their latest hit records employed over loud Tannoy speakers helping to keep the immediate neighbourhood awake until the last skid slowed to a stop, had also added extra colour to that long ago scene of the travelling funfair. Deafening yet delightfully mad.
Subsequently branching out into the freelance invention of railway scenic product, the now widely known 'JigStones' self cast model building system was introduced in 1992.
interest in the earlier heritage world of the fairground scene, and funfair ambience, has also stamped a significant milestone in personal hobby activities, culminating naturally with railway modelling. The 'Fairs Please!' range of funfair card models in '00' scale have become a satisfying project I now want to share with you.
As a specialist area of scenic railway modelling, I expect no great rewards through such commerce, but i hope to help promote, through some encouragement and creation, a larger picture in model railway dioramic styling.
most large towns, and even some villages, enjoy a visiting funfair each year. the layout just requires an 'events' field in place, or an emptied market square or car park to accommodate one - just for a brief spell.
Partly responsible for installation of the live steam outdoor model railway at the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway in Devon, my days now are more relaxed,
however, the joy of supplying ideas to the hobby still continues.
